Years of performance in the Washington D.C. music scene have cultivated
Touch Acoustra's sophisticated jazz, rock, roots, classical, and eastern
musical sensibilities. Headed by guitarist Rob Coltun, the band draws from
an
eclectic palette evident in the quintet's unusual compositions and
chemistry.
The band consists of Matt Rippetoe (Tenor Sax), Joe Brotherton
(Trumpet), Rob Coltun (Guitar), Mark Blackwood (Acoustic Bass) and Mark
Prince on Drums (Andy Milne, Steve Coleman). Touch Acoustra has its
foundations in funk, R&B and jazz, and has absorbed a variety of
influences including classical, Latin and African music. The band shares
a love of composition and arranging.
The songs of Touch Acoustra were conceived mostly through improvisation,
later to become a layered jazz narrative. The music ranges from
free-spirited tone poems, washes of pure improvisational pleasure,
guitar-driven melodies
reminiscent of African and Brazilian music, to party funk. Their
recently released CD When It Comes Upon You, produced by Adam
Levy
(Norah Jones, Tracey Chapman) has received much critical acclaim.
